Introduction to the lifestyle and cultural landscape of Rochester

Week 1 Introductions Consumerism/Economy in America Banking/ Money Week 2 Review week 1 How to find a job How to find housing Week 3 Family/ Social Structure Dependence/Independence Living arrangements- including types of housing and how to get housing Week 4 A year in the life of America and Rochester- Holidays, special occasions, etc. Culture, food, and celebration Social activities, hobbies, relaxation Week 5 Going out to eat- types of restaurants What’s on a menu Etiquette in restaurants, mealtime etiquette in different settings Celebration- we share our cultures with each other show and tell cultural artifacts and potluck snack table. 1. To help you best adjust to the lifestyle and culture in Rochester and America. 2. To help you integrate the cultures of your homeland and America into a new, comfortable life for yourself. 3. To help you integrate with the society and people here in Rochester, so that you can increase your confidence talking to and interacting with Americans. 4. To expose you to new activities and hobbies to expand your interests so you will be active and find friends with similar interests. 5. To provide a safe place (classroom) to meet and interact with new people, and make new friends! What to bring to class with you: 1. Enthusiasm, curiosity, inquiry and your experiences to share. 2. Supplies- pen or writing utensil, blank paper or notebook. 3. Stories, artifacts or food from your culture to share with us. 1. Come on time. We will start not on time or no more than 5 minutes after 7. If you know you will be late, but want to attend, contact me to discuss. 2. Class will be from 7-8:30 with class instruction, interaction activities and show and tell. 3. There will be homework. Since we will not make field trips, homework is important to observe your environment and learn about American culture to break stereotypes or myths of what you think is true. Sometimes you will have a choice of homework assignments, done alone or if you choose, with a friend in class. 4. Your feedback is important to me. The class' success is based on your participation. I want you to feel safe to participate in the way you feel comfortable- talk in class to me, leave suggestions in a box, or e-mail, call me, or any other way you are comfortable. Miscellaneous: I am available outside class for one-on-one or small group (two people) life experience coaching for an additional fee. As I am starting out, I appreciate your enthusiasm and support. All classes and one-on-one or small group fees are given at a substantial (most cases 50%) discount. Check, money order or paypal payments only. Personal checks or money orders made out to Jennifer Kumar and sent to: Authentic Journeys, PO Box 284, Pittsford, NY 14534 with the registration form. I will issue you a reciept. If paying by pay pal, take note there is a $4 additional cost for this to cover paypal transaction fees. If you pay by pay pal, please download or print the registration form and e-mail it or send it t me in postal mail. Pay pal issues reciepts.
Refunds: There are no refunds. All sales final.
